I guess you can’t change the start-up sound or any Window sound from the control panel, but there are ways that you can use to change it but make it using your own risk.

1. Create a copy of imageres.dll in your Desktop. You can find it from c:windowssystem32.

2. Launch the Command Prompt as an Administrator and type TAKEOWN /F %windir%system32imagesres.dll && ICACLS %windir%system32imageres.dll /GRANT Administrator:F (This will change the ownership to Administrator and it will give full control on imageres.dll)

3. Visit www.bome.com/products/restorator and download the Restorator trial.

4. Install it and then launch Restorator.

5. Expand the Wave folder on the left side. Notice the file 5080. This is the original start-up sound played when logging in to Windows 7. Right-click on it and then click Assign then Assign To…

6. Select your desired start-up sound in .wav format and click Open.

7. Press Ctrl+S to save your changes and then quit Restorator.

Ensure that you tick the Play Windows Startup Sound check box.

In Microsoft Windows XP, changing the startup sound is very easy. Just click Start, go to Control Panel then double-click “Sounds and Audio Devices”. Select Sounds tab. On the list below “Program events” section, scroll down until you see Start Windows. Select it then pick a new sound below under Sounds section. If you have your own sound file, click Browse then go to your file.

Click Apply and then OK. But in Microsoft Windows 7, it is a different story. Changing the startup sound that Windows plays when it starts is no longer possible. According to the posts I’ve read in the Microsoft Community website, the actual startup sound is already built-in to the Windows operating system and there’s no way of changing it from the Control Panel or anywhere within Windows.

Even if Microsoft removed the freedom from its users to change the startup sound in Windows 7, there is a program that can do it automatically. To change the startup sound in Microsoft Windows 7, use Winaero Tweaker. It allows a user to change the startup sound in Microsoft Windows 7 along with the other tweaks you can do with your operating system. It supports Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
