I am having a BIG problem installing self extracting programs such as RAR. It just wont install smoothly.

And to make it worse, my OS also stops working once the installation hangs and so I have to reboot.

So I need to know how to cancel this self extracting wizard installation so that I don't have to restart the OS and just try to install it again.

I hope it's not too confusing.

Thanks.

Hi,

I believe what you're trying to say is that you cant install a program because the WinRAR auto extract software it comes with makes your computer stop working, If this is the case then:

Scenario 1

The program you downloaded maybe corrupted or downloaded incomplete.

Solution

Re download the program again, if it came from a CD/DVD the CD/DVD maybe full of scratches already making the computer  read it incorrectly. and then try it again.

Scenario 2

The earlier installation which it failed to complete is making the computer do infinite retries or processes.

Solution

Try searching for the installation location/folder the program supposed to install it in the first place then delete all files inside the folder. you can see it in the progress bar of the rar auto extractor. Delete the files the RAR auto extractor installed. and try again.

If that does not work try doing a system restore from an earlier time where you have not tried installing the program. after which Re download the program again, if it came from a CD/DVD the CD/DVD maybe full of scratches already making the computer  read it incorrectly. and then try it again.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Extracting is a windows process so should be able to find that process in windows task manager. Follow the below steps.

  1. Right click on the task bar and go to start task manager.
  2. Check the applications tab. There you’ll be able to find the running extracting task.
  3. Right click on the task and Click Go to process.
  4. Now you can right click on the process and terminate the process manually.

Now the extracting process should be stopped.
