How can I save open office document as Microsoft files?

I happen to like using Open Office Suite for personal use. The advantages it has include the fact that it is free and bears a counterpart for every Microsoft application. Although the Open Office Suite lacks Outlook, the Mozilla Thunderbird is sufficient for me.

I however have found out that the Microsoft office that we use at my office cannot open the files I create at home using the Open Office Suite. This is a big setback because I happen to have a lot of presentations and reports. Is there a way of saving open office document as Microsoft files?

This is one common problem which is faced by people who tend to use Open office instead of MS office due to its simplicity as compared to its counterpart. But this problem has a very easy solution.

When you are done with your document and want to save it, click on the "Save As" option and save it in MS Word .doc file and you are good to go.

You can then send this file to anyone who uses the MS word or can even go to your office with this file and use it. The only thing you have to take care off is that first see which version of MS Word is installed in your office.

Either its 2003 or 2007, because both have different files. 2003 saves in .doc while 2007 saves in .docx. First see the version in your office then convert it to that format from the Open Office

You may need to use the save as option in the open office application and see if there is a compatibility format among those formats so that you can save the document like it is done in ms office 2010/2007 to allow the documents to be opened in the earlier versions.

An alternative will be to install ms office 2007 on your Linux machine. MS Office can be installed successfully on a Linux machine using an application called crossover. The installation is done from the command line and therefore you will need to get tutorials and guidelines that will help you go about installing MS Office.
