How can I run DOS programs in windows XP

Lately I've been interested in running DOS programs on my Windows XP. More precisely I've been trying to run Elizabeth:Gloriana an old PC game from Abadonia. The problem is that I can't run it as it is under Windows XP operating system, even with all the compatibility modes it provides (16 bit, 640 x 480 etc.)

I've searched on Google but couldn't find an appropriate answer. I've discovered so far that the game needs to be run in DOS, but I have no idea how to access it or (if possible) to use it in a Windows XP environment.

I've also came across something called DOSbox but I don't know if it is useful for my problem or not.

Thanks in advance

Hello Umren51.

You can run DOS games using an emulator that emulates an X86 PC with DOS.

This great piece of software is known as DOSBox Download Link

It was created by running a good ol' DOS games in all it's 16-bit glory within operating systems that do not have an underlying DOS such Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux, FreeBSD, or even Mac OS X.  You need to download the DOSBox program itself.

Since it uses command line, you might want to download one of the free graphical front-ends also. As for the game that you want to play, I can't seem to find it in the compatibility list Download Link.

But you won't know if it works until you try, right?

Hope this helps!

Hi Umren,

There in nothing like DOS in Windows XP all what exists is Command Prompt which is not DOS exactly and didn’t support DOS programs. Yes DOSbox is most widely and perfect utility for running DOS programs specially on Windows 2000 and XP. To install and use a DOSbox download DOS box from a reliable site or buy the CD.

Run setup and follow the steps.

  1. Read license agreement and agree.
  2. Select the option if you need a shortcut on desktop.
  3. Give the path, preferably in C: drive.
  4. Click Install.
  5. Restart the system if needed. Run the program and you will see the DOS like view.

Run the DOS application you want. Enjoy games.

Hi dear,

You can easily run any program in any mode by changing its compatibility. To do so, right click on the program, and choose properties. You will see a property window.

Click on compatibility, and then you will see this window.

HDVidCodec Properties Compatibility

Click the “Run this program in compatibility mode” box, then choose from the list that is below it.

Then click apply and then OK.

Thanks.
