I have problem with my computer as I am bother by  hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys files in my PC. It is getting a huge amount of space. I am not sure if it is a virus so I don't want to delete it right away. I noticed the file when I used a USB to save a online RPG game in my PC that I can use to install. I already tried deleting it once but when I restarted my PC again, it was there again existing in my files.

My PC model is Dell Inpiron 14R. Is there anything I can do to remove  hiberfil. sys and pagefile. sys in my computer files?

PAGEFILE.SYS is the virtual memory file Windows uses. Typically, on install, Windows sets the size of the file at around 1.5 times your physical memory size however this size will vary depending on the amount of free space on the disk when the file is established and other factors.

Here’s how to remove pagefile.sys from Windows :

1. Go to Control Panel and run System.
2. Click on Advanced tab and click the Settings button on Performance.

3. Click on Advanced tab again and click on the Change button.
4. Select “No paging file” and click the Set button if you want to remove pagefile.sys.

HIBERFIL.SYS is a file the system creates when the computer goes into hibernation mode. Windows uses the file when it is turned back on. If you don't need hibernation mode and want to delete the file you need to turn the hibernation option off before Windows will allow you to delete the file.

  • Procedure for Windows XP. This procedure makes use of the graphical user interface.

    • Start | Control Panel | Power Options
    • Go to the Hibernate Tab.
    • Uncheck the Enable Hibernation box if you don't need the hibernation function.
    • The file should now be able to be deleted.

The files you want to delete are the files that your system creates when you hibernate your computer. The following are the simple steps to delete hiberfil.sys files.

  1. Locate your command prompt, Right-click it and select Run as administrator. Command prompt window will then open.
  2. In the command prompt type powercfg.exe /hibernate off.
  3. Press Enter key.
  4. The box will flash. Type exit.
  5. Press Enter key. This will exit the command prompt.

Deleting the pagefil.sys is not recommended for it will affect the performance of the computer. This file is used the virtual memory of the system(Windows). Doing so would slowdown your computer.
