How to access Windows when password is forgotten?

I got the laptop back, the one that I gave my sister 18 months ago when it was barely ever used. The problem is, it is password protected and I have forgotten the password. My sister is no longer with us. She has passed on. The password has eight characters. The Dell XPS1730 Dual Core laptop is running a Windows Vista with 2.6 GHz and dual graphic cards. Is there any way that I can access Windows? Since there are files that we wish to keep like photographs etc. I will be grateful for all the help I can get.

Hello there! Here are some ways to access Windows Vista if you have forgotten your password:

  1. You can use the Windows Vista password reset disk if you have it.

  2. Log in as administrator on your computer. Type in administrator as the user name and press enter. Usually, the administrator does not have a password.

  3. You can use software like windows password recovery programs that are designed to reset or delete your password or even recover the old password for you. This program is a bit complicated but if you will just follow the step by step procedures, then this might be the right fix for you.

  4. Your last resort to fix this problem, do a clean install of windows vista. You will lose all the data in your computer but at least you can still use it.

Besides using the Vista password reset tools, you may also use Active@ Boot Disk (Live CD), which is a CD that lets you start the computer right from the disk itself. It’s got a couple of very useful software/utilities and among them is the Active@ Password Changer that lets you change whatever password the Windows Operating System is used to something of your choice.

Simply download the installer and then install it on a different computer. Use it to create a disk image and then burn it on a blank CD. Insert the newly created disk on your laptop (the one you no longer remember the password) and then restart the laptop again. Make sure to boot from the CD and not from the laptop.

The rest is self-explanatory.

Hope this is useful.

You can use your Password Reset Disk if you have it or use a Windows Vista Password Reset tool.

Try the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (ONTP&RE) and the PC Login Now.

These two programs will help you reset your Windows Vista password. And then burn the downloaded files as an ISO to a disk and then once you successfully burned it, boot from the disk that you just created.
