Upgrading your Android OS to the latest version depends on the support of your device and the manufacturer’s latest OS update. You can check if your OS is updated but if the manufacturer didn’t modify Android Lollipop for your device, you can’t have it on your phone.
In order to update or upgrade your Android,
1. Connect to internet on your device.
2. Go to Apps >> Settings >> About Device >> Software update.
3. Tap “Update”.
Now, if your Android is upgradable to Android Lollipop, you’ll get a message that your device is about to be updated to Android Lollipop.
As Android Lollipop comes with lots of changes, many manufacturers have made highest upgrade to KitKat only which is also a nice OS. Lollipop isn’t available for most of the devices but KitKat is.
It's always a good idea to keep a backup of your personal data before upgrading your OS as sometimes, you might face trouble with upgrading. Though it's very rare, the upgrading process is generally safe.
