You problem is very easy to answer. You need to reformat your computer to erase everything. Install an operating system that you currently have or the most that is compatible to your computer. I don't have an idea on how old your computer is, but I suggest that you reformat it using Windows XP. I also think that to make it more attractable to others, install all common software that there is right now. Provide some games for them to play because this what most clients look for when they are buying used computers.
Any way just do the reformat or fresh install of your operating system and you will be fine. No information will be retained in your computer.

To ensure that all your sensitive information and other important documents that you might not want to lose has been erased from you old computer that you want to sell, then I will suggest that you do a clean format and remove the operating system that is on it and install another fresh one.
Just look for a CD that has the operating system that can be used on your computer, it can windows XP, windows 7 or whichever and then run the setup on that computer to install it. When install it, ensure that you format all the drives that have any documents, so that they are left empty and clean. This way, the computer will only have the operating system without any other information.
