This issue you have here is usually due to licensing problems. It mostly happens on Microsoft Windows Vista when a user starts Adobe Acrobat 9 the message “A serious error has been detected and Adobe EPIC_APP cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again” appears. There are three solutions that can be applied here in case the other one fails.

First method is to modify the startup method of FLEXNet Licensing Service. To try this, click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. From the list of services, look for FLEXNet Licensing Service, and then double-click it. Change the “Startup type” to Manual then click OK. Start Adobe Acrobat and see what happens.

If this method didn’t work try running Acrobat.exe as administrator once so the license can be activated. To do this, go to the installation folder of Adobe Acrobat 9 and look for the file Acrobat.exe. If you can’t find it, search for the file using Windows Search. Right-click on it, point to “Run as”, and select Administrator. Run Acrobat again and see what happens.

If this, too, didn’t work, uninstall Adobe Acrobat from your computer. Next, restart your computer. After restarting, install back Adobe Acrobat with administrative privileges. To do this, right-click on the setup.exe file and select Properties. Select Compatibility tab. Under “Privilege level”, check “Run this program as an administrator” and click OK. After that, run Adobe Acrobat once using an administrator account to access Shell32.dll and configure the proper settings.
