Hard disk error program on XP

I own an external hard disk and I want to check it for errors. Thus, I performed error checking from Properties>Tools. I ticked the two options: “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”. For a while, I believed it stopped scanning so I decided to click the Cancel button and then the disk is unserviceable.

It displayed a message: “X: is not accessible. Access is denied." I encountered that message again after I attempted to check for errors. Kindly help me with my problem.

Your hard disk may have got corrupted. You may want to try to plug it on another computer to see if the computer will see it. If it can be seen, most likely you just need to update drivers on the device. If it cannot be seen then the hard disk is most likely be corrupted. There are several Data recovery tools available on the market. Most data recovery tools are expensive but there are also some that are for free. You may wish to try SpinRite or Kernel Data Recovery.

Kernel Data Recovery tool offers a free demo versions of the software that you can use to evaluate the data loss status of your Hard Disk. You may also try to use https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download. Another procedure that some used as it’s free of charge is placing your Hard disk on the Freezer. Place the Hard disk on a zip lock bag then freeze it in for about 6 hours.

You will need to unplug the external hard drive from your computer and then plug it again. That is a problem that occurred when you cancelled the scan when it was still in progress but the hard disk should work just fine after you unplug it and then plug it again. In case the problem persists, then you will need to do the following:

  • Try changing the ports with which you are connecting the external hard drive with to the computer, for the problem may be with the ports.
  • You will also need to try changing the USB cable that you are using, maybe it developed some problem.

You also need to restart the computer and see what will the response. Restarting will refresh the settings of the computer.
