It was my first time to use Outlook for Mac 2011 and I was then configuring it when I got this error message, see below.

Mail could not be received at this time.

The server for account ”**********” returned the error ”authentication failed.” Your username/password or security setting may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?

I am not that techie so I need someone to guide me on how to resolve this error.

Can any expert in this forum help me?

In order to resolve this issue, you need to check your account settings again in the outlook, and be sure to have the correct username and password available with you.

You have not mentioned the version of Ms outlook you are using whether it is 2003, 2007, or 2010, and also what type of connection you use, it could be POPs, Exchange Server etc. However, some general hints and procedures are given below, perform them step by step:

·         Open outlook, click on TOOLS, then click on ACCOUNTS

·         Click on your E.mail Account and click on MORE OPTIONS under the outgoing server

·         Check the authentication check dropdown box  if it is set to NONE change it to USE INCOMING SERVER INFO

·         If it is set to USE INCOMING SERVER INFO change it to NONE

·         Click OK

·         Select “User Name and Password” next to Authentication and enter your username and password provided to you by your mail administrator for the outgoing mail server. Click OK

·         Now close all dialogue boxes, open outlook, and navigate to the outbox, and DELETE all messages if present in outbox

·         Now try sending a test message to yourself

If the issue still persists, then you have to change your SMTP Port

·         Open outlook, click on TOOLS, then click on ACCOUNTS

·         Click on your E.mail Account and click on  OVERRIDE DEFAULT PORT box under OUTGOING SERVER

·         In port BOX type 587

·         On the SSL TO CONNECT (RECOMMENDED) box, click

·         Close all windows

·         Start outlook, and again delete all messages from your outgoing folder, and then again send a test message

Hope fully your problem should be resolved

This error occurs when you try to receive an email in your MS Outlook for Mac 2011. Most probably because of an incorrect account settings. To fix this, please follow the solutions below:

Hi there user:

Open the Outlook, and on the Tools menu, click Accounts. Then select your email account, the account you used when you encountered error. You have to make sure that you enter the correct MTP server in the outgoing server box. You must select the override smtp port. Type 587 in the box. These steps applicable to your Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011.
