Got an error while scanning documents using HP ScanJet

I just installed a new HP Scanner ScanJet 5400c and was testing it when I got this error message.

HP Precisionscan Pro

Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. (Scanner not found.)

I was able to get my own scanner since I had to scan documents a lot.

I was so happy with this versus sharing a networked scanner.

I could not go back in using the shared scanner so please help me resolve the issue.

Thanks a lot.

Dear JM,

The error occurred communicating with the scanning device.

Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again."

Follow the following steps in sequence

1. Verify physical connections Like electrical connections and USB connections, connect the scanner directly to the USB port on the laptop computer, remove all usb devices from computer.

2. If possible, connect the USB cable to a USB port on the opposite side of the computer. For example, move the USB cable from the USB ports on the front of the computer to the USB ports on the back of the computer.

3. Verify minimum resources are met, check scanner box for minimum requirements.

4. Unplug the scanner, restart the computer system, and then reinstall the HP scanning software.

5. Install the scanning software following the screen prompts. The install instructions will vary slightly between different scanner models.

6. Reconnect the HP Scanjet scanner, restart the computer system, and reload the drivers

You can check the following things to make sure that there is no error in your device.

  • First check the power cable and make sure that it is working fine. If your scanner has a power cable.
  •  Check the data cable for your scanner and make sure that is working properly.
  •  If your data cable is correct then check the drivers of your device and make sure that they are up to date.
  •  Check for any jam in scanner roller or any kind of jam you can find.
  •  Once make a scan that is for no paper if you are able to do that.
  •  Check for any light blink or light lid in your scanner.
  •  Check that your scanner is in warranty or not if it is in warranty then you can replace it with another one.

If the scanner software is already installed, make sure the scanner itself is connected to your computer before starting the application. The software has to detect the device to execute proper initialization. That error means the software was unable to detect the scanner. If the scanner is already connected to your computer via the USB port, try transferring the connection to another USB port.

There are four USB ports at the back of the CPU by default plus one or more in the front. Try connecting the scanner to all available USB ports if the problem continues. Try also downloading the driver from the HP website. Go to HP Customer Support – Software and Driver Downloads. Here, select the category of your product.

On the next page, enter the product name of your device to search. You can find it printed on the side or bottom of the device. Once your product is located, click it to go to the download page. Download and install all available drivers and software for your device. If the scanner still can’t be detected, try replacing the USB cable with a new one.
