I received Google Chrome Installer Error 3 when trying to upgrade it to the latest version.

I got the link in Google so I am not quite sure why I cannot continue with upgrading.

Can someone please help me with this issue?

Thanks.

Hello Eric,

The error that you reported: "The installer encountered error 3." means that Google Chrome failed to communicate with Google Update. Google Update is one of the components (it is a separate executable with filename GoogleUpdate.exe) of Google Chrome.

Every time you update Chrome, it triggers GoogleUpdate.exe to initiate the update process by connecting to the update servers, downloading the necessary files and all the other steps necessary to update Chrome.

It would be best for you to read up on the details regarding this error and how it can be fixed from Google's own support site.

One of the fixes involves editing the registry which is dangerous for someone without any prior experience. Of course, the simplest approach would be to simply uninstall and reinstall Google Chrome.

Hope this helps!

Here is what worked to fix it:

  • Close Google Chrome.
  • Click the Start Orb.
  • In the search box, type CMD.
  • Click on the CMD icon and you will see the command window open.
  • Type: cd %localappdata%googleupdate.
  • After you press enter, you cursor should now be in your Google update directory.
  • Type: GoogleUpdate.exe /RegServer.
  • Running that only took a second.
  • Open Google chrome and check ‘About Google Chrome’ again and it should now check the update servers successfully.
