Global Catalog Server on Domain Controller

Hi Tina,

Global Catalog servers are basically a distributed data repository which contains and holds a searchable, partial representation of every known object in every domain on a multi domain Active directory domain services forest. Domain controllers of a certain forest usually holds and stores 3 full writable directory partitions namely, domain directory, schema directory and configuration directory. It is the global catalog which holds these directory partitions. It also keeps read only copy of all other domain directory partitions in a forest. Data are stored on a single directory database usually called ntds.dit on the server. It does not hold any separate storage for its attributes and treated as additional information for the domain controller.
