Format change in different MS Word versions?

Hello! I am a student and I am working on a project. I was working on a case study and the data I found against it, I typed it and saved it in MS Word 2010, which was installed in my University's computer lab. So back when I came home and opened the same word folder I saved in MS Word 2010, I opened it on MS word 2007 which is installed on my computer. But the format was not correct, line spacing was going no where, there was irregular space between lines and it was hard to believe because I actually saved the document in proper format. There was a lot of text so it actually took me an hour or so to correct the format again. So I am concerned if changing the MS word version can cause such errors or not? Because apparently that is the only reason I see and if that is the reason, I can be careful while working in future. Thanks!
