Hi,

I have a Samsung 500 GB hard disk's drive and I want to know if you guys have any ideas on how to prevent or repair bad sectors on my hard drive? After 1 year of using my computer, I started encountering issues with my HDD. It appears that there are plenty of bad sectors in my hard disk causing my computer to slow down at times.

Any suggestion will be truly appreciated.

I have a few recommendations on how to prevent bad sectors from occurring on your Hard disk drives or HDD. Here are a few pointers you that you should always keep in mind:

  1. Avoid applying shock to your hard disk drive. This includes bumping, dropping, or action that will apply force on your HDD.
  2. If your computer is turned on, avoid moving or bumping your CPU.
  3. Handle your HDD properly. Never touch any of the exposed circuit board of your HDD.
  4. Make sure that your HDD is well mounted on your PC case.
  5. Always make sure that your CPU is well ventilated or cooled.
  6. Make sure that the power connectors on your HDD are properly attached. Voltage fluctuation can cause damage to your HDD.
  7. Perform a Disk Defrag every now and then, depending on your PC usage.
  8. Always create partitions on your HDD.
  9. Make sure that you have more than enough RAM to optimize the functionality of your HDD.

Hope this helps.

From the way I understand it, bad sectors are physical damages on your hard drive. They are sometimes caused by scratches on the surface of the disk. Since it is a physical damage, there is no way to repair bad sectors on the HDD.

However, there are ways that you can do to compensate for the bad sectors that you have. One is by adding more memory (RAM) on your PC to help the HDD cope with the work load. This will help prevent excessive caching on your HDD.

I suggest you do this to help resolve the issue.

That definitely makes sense. Too many bad sectors cannot be repaired. At least there’s a way to handle the sluggish performance of my hard disk. I will definitely try this once. I still have time to buy new RAM for my PC.

How about a software? Is there any software that virtually repair or improve  HDD  performance?

Here is a list of software that you can try to help you with your hard disk drive issue. These programs claim that they can repair bad sectors on HDD by “regenerating magnetic surfaces”. Since your HDD is already damaged, I suggest that you try them one at a time until you find the one that will solve the issue.
Good luck!

  • Flobo HDD Repair.
  • Spinrite.
  • Hard drive Mechanic.
  • HDD Regenerator.
  • Seagate DiskWizard.
  • ADRC Data Recovery Tools.
  • Partition Table Doctor.
