Windows Update error code “80070490”, according to Microsoft support, is related to a problem with the CBS Manifest file. This error can happen if the CBS manifest or the Component-Based Servicing is corrupt when you are updating your operating system using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

You may receive this error on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.x and all of these operating systems have the same solution, by running the System File Checker utility. The System File Checker utility or SFC is a built-in tool in Microsoft Windows that scans all protected system files.

When an incorrect version is detected, which normally happens when a file is corrupt, the tool replaces them with the correct Microsoft version. This tool normally requires the user to insert the Windows setup disc because the tool needs to copy the required DLL files from the disc to the system drive.

To run the SFC tool, in Windows 7, click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories” then right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator” to open an elevated command prompt. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter. Insert your Windows setup CD or DVD on your optical drive when you are prompted then continue.

When it is finished, close the command prompt then restart the computer and then try installing the Windows Update again. If the problem continues, download the System Update Readiness Tool to fix the corruption on your operating system.
