I downloaded GIMP 2.8.0 on my computer. The problem is, I can open JPG files without issues but I was unable to save it as .jpg. Nor in gif or png file format. I am encountering an error when trying to save on those format. Other file format works just fine. How can I save my images to all formats? Please help!

The given filename cannot be used for saving

You can use this dialog to save to the GIMP XCF format. Use File–>Export to export to other file formats.

Take me to the Export dialog

If you can’t save it into another format using the Save As option then try exporting it to the format you desire as what was suggested in the dialog box. In early releases of GIMP, saving of PNG and JPG files are easy because the image’s format is preserved and will be saved in the same format when you click the Save command.

But things have changed in GIMP 2.8. When you open a PNG or JPG file, the image loaded will be imported to XCF format as a new project. And thus when you click the Save command, the JPG or PNG file you opened will now be saved in the new XCF format, for example sample.xcf. When you open a file named “sakura.jpg”, it will be saved as “sakura.xcf” when you click Save.

If you want to save it in other format and you don’t want to use the XCF format or you want to use the original format of the file, you need to use the Export command.
