Hi there,

I downloaded and installed Portable Ubuntu on my system. I was able to extract the file to my desired destination. However it is currently producing a fatal error which I am unable to interpret. I can still use Ubuntu but there is no graphical interface

Cygwin/X displays the following error "A fatal error has occured and Cygwin/X will now exit. Please open/var/log/XWin.0.log for more information.

Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project
Release: 1.7.3.0(10703000)
Contact: cywin-xfree@cywin.com
Build Date: 2009-12-22

XWin was started with the following command-line
XWin :0 -ac -notrayicon -multiwindow -dpi 100"

Thanks,
Edward

Hi there,

Try moving your UBUNTU-TRES folder to the root of the hard drive instead of extracting and installing in any other "Destination".

Because cygwin often cause problems with difference of the allowed characters and length of the path between win and unix environment.

If that doesn't work please download and install the DOS version of Cygwin/X. You can download the DOS version from here " http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableubuntu/files/ ", and copy the directory of cygwin to your copy of TRES directory. And the problem will be solved.

Hope it helps!!

Hallo Edward,

The error that you are getting could be due to a binary issue to replace the existing XWin.exe. You will need to try running the new XWin.20110102-git-29db9091c6ae4995.exe and see if it will work well on the server. There could be a problem with a missing font that is causing the text not to display.

You should also try another cygwin installation and see if it will be able to work with the new XWin setup. After that you will need to go back and then try the original system and see if it is now working as it should. There could be a lingering font connection by the previous XWin.exe that is causing the issue.

Regards,

Carl
