Whenever I start my laptop, I get a ‘fan error’ message. When I investigated further, I noticed that the fan on the laptop does not work. Why is the fan not responding? What could be the cause of the faulty fan and what do I have to do to get is working again?

Any cooling fan, whether it is on a desktop PC or on a laptop, will eventually wear out in the long run as a result of wear and tear. This phenomenon should be expected to happen in all types of devices and gadgets sometimes as a result of interaction. If the cooling fan on your laptop is no longer working, you should replace it immediately to avoid any damage on the inside.

One of the components that is greatly affected because of a malfunctioning cooling fan is the processor. In a laptop, it is the cooling fan that manages and maintains the temperature inside the computer. It is very important for the processor to have a lower temperature to function properly. If the temperature inside becomes too hot as a result of a faulty cooling fan, the processor will overheat and this results to immediately shutting down your machine.

It would be fine if this happens not too often since it doesn’t immediately damages the processor. But if the overheating of the processor happens very frequently, this is very bad for the CPU because you might end up with a fried processor and your computer will no longer work.

To prevent any type of damage on the internal parts, you should immediately bring your laptop to a qualified service technician so the cooling fan can be replaced.

Cooling fan in a laptop is normally get started only when there is excessive heat generated inside the laptop after long run. The reason for not working fan could be 1) Faulty fan due to bearing  2) Faulty connection from motherboard to fan 2) fan leaves get struck on the fan body due to bending of fan leaves. As you said there is error message, the BIOS of the laptop is detecting the fan on laptop startup transmitting the error on the screen. The solutions are  a) Consult with a Laptop Technician b) If you are confident, you can open the laptop with the help of small screw driver.

If the fan is dusted, removal of dust from the fan may give you a temporary solution for it.
