I want to type a common fraction in Microsoft Excel.

That is 1/3. After typing, when I press Enter button then it is automatically changed into date format like this: 3-January.

Now I want to type only 1/3 [One by three].

How can I fix this problem?

If you are using Microsoft Office Excel 2007 spreadsheet then following these simple steps will fix your problem instantly:

1. On the MS Excel worksheet, select the cell, and format the cells in which you want to display fraction numbers (before entering any data).

2. On the Home tab, in the Number group, click at the Number Format drop-down list, and then click Fraction.

3. Type desired numbers in the cells, and Excel 2007 will display the numbers or results as fractions. For instance:

  • To display 1/3, type 1, followed by /, and then 3.
  • To display 25 7/9, type 25, followed by a space, and then the fraction.

You can also modify the number format in Office Excel 2007, as it displays and converts a fraction, click the Number Format drop-down list, and then click More Number Formats.

Excel Fraction changed into Data format.

Usually, when we type a fraction (“1/3” as mentioned by you) in a excel cell automatically it will be appeared as a date.

However there are many ways that you can change it to appear as a fraction.

Method 1 – Format the cell to a text format

First select the cell or rang of cells that you want to type the fractions.

Then right click on the selected area and click on the format cell.

Go to the number tab and select “text” and click ok.

Now type the fraction (e.g. 1/3) it will appear as a fraction.

Method 2

This is another easy way to type a fraction as it is.

Go to the cell that you want to type the fraction.

First type a space and then type the fraction.

Then the fraction will be appeared as it is.

Method 3

First select the cells that you want type fractions and right click and click on format cell.

(Same way as mentioned in method 1)

Then in the number tab select “accounting” and click ok.

Then type a fraction in that cell or cells. It will appear as a fraction.
