Error When Starting Microsoft Groove Workspace

When starting Microsoft Groove 2007 workspace, I get the following error:

Error opening binary file store database.

I'm trying to run my MS Groove workspace from MS Groove 2010. How can I resolve the issue? Right now my temporary solution is be to close MS Groove using Task Manager and start all over again. But this gets a bit annoying because I need to do this from time to time.

What is the permanent solution for this problem I'm having?

The message “Error Opening Binary File Store Database” occurs when the binary file store was locked because:

  • You are trying to run more than one instance of groove.exe on multiple terminal service sessions
  • The previous Groove did not shutdown completely
  • You do not have permissions to write to the file

To have this matter resolve, you can try:

  • Exit Groove in one session then restart Groove on another session
  • If the previous Groove did not shutdown completely try the following:

    • Press on CTRL+ALT+DEL
    • Go to Task Manager
    • Choose Processes tab
    • Look for Groove.exe
    • Select it
    • Click on End Process
  • If you lack the permissions to write to the file, try:

    • Locate the directory which has the Groovebinaryfilestore.xss file
    • Right-click on the directly
    • Go to Properties
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Choose your user account
    • Display your permissions
    • Check and make sure you the Write permissions to the said directory or file
