Hi Experts,

Hi, I tried to watch a movie on DVD using Windows Media Player and this error message popped up which was unusual since it was the first time.

The message said about a DVD decoder not installed but how can I get the correct decoder?

I tried searching the web, but didn’t know where to look.

Please help.

Error below:

Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

This happens when you are trying to play a file that was created using a codec that the program (Windows Media Player in this case) does not have by default. It usually comes free with a DVD drive when you purchase it. Such program is Power DVD. If you have one, then you may want to upgrade to the latest version of the software or reinstall the decoder. If you do not, then you will need to purchase a plug-in for Media Player. You may check the link below:

Please be sure to purchase the program suited for your operating system. You may also download free decoders online. Some of those are:

VLC  Media Player: Download link1

K-Lite: Download Link2

It would also be best to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Media Player as they may have released newer codes.

Good luck!

Hi,

Codes can be downloaded from Microsoft's website, but sometimes it does'nt work so the only possible way to make it work is by updating your computer or reintalling Windows Media Player. Instead of doing that, I highly recommend using a third-party software called VLC. It has almost all the features that Windows Media Player can do and it can play almost all media extensions or music files. The good thing about VLC is its easy to use and it's free. Just download the Application from videolan.org and install it. You don't have to install any codecs or plugins since it is included in the package. VLC Program has a simple interface which has the capability of playing CDs, DVDs, and it even supports Blue Playback though it requires bluray capable Optical Drives.

Hope this helps
