Error – packed file corrupt when installation of Win 98

I received this error message after I have installed the Windows 98 from MS-DOS “Packed File Corrupt.” In the middle of the installation process after the scandisk, the installation set-up started copying the files to the hard drive but it was blocked by the error message. The set-up forced the process to go back to MS-DOS prompt.

I restarted my PC and initialized the set-up again, but the error code had appeared repeatedly. According to my friend, the error was caused by the viruses. I have very important documents on the Drive C of my computer where the programs of the computer are also installed. How can I manage to solve this problem without sacrificing my pertinent documents?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Halsey,

This error message is caused by running an .exe file that has been "packed" using EXEPACK utility. One way to resolve this issue is by increasing the Files and Buffers from your Comfig.sys file. You need to load MS-DOS low or LOADFIX. LOADFIX ensures that a program is loaded.

Hi Halsey,

Your friend is right that error occurred due to a virus. Therefore, you can try 3 options:

1. Using an anti-virus software try to remove the virus.

2. Back up the data and format the partition.

Below links will provide the required codes to do the backup using Dos:

3. Try to repair it.

Use windows disk utility click start > program > accessories > system tools and scan disk select the diver you want click thorough check, automatically fix errors then press start.

Then Use Partition Recovery software to recover or fix lost top-level folders.

Thanks,

Hope this was helpful.
