Hi,

I am using Windows Vista on a desktop computer. Whenever I start my system, it gives me an error – “Operating System not found” and gives me a black screen. Occasionally it also gave me an error – “boot disk failure” prompted with a black display and system does not boot to OS. I tried launch up repair from Advance Boot Menu, but failed. I also do not have an option of factory image set up coz it does not boot to “One Time Boot Menu”.

Thanks.

Mr. Jack,

We need to determine the cause of this problem. There could be several reasons for this problem. This could be due to storage controller driver may have gone corrupt. Please check the storage controller driver; if it is NVIDIA ATA storage controller driver then you are saved from replacing any hardware component.

Here are the troubleshooting steps:

  1. Please use Windows Vista media shipped with the system or windows anytime upgrade media to launch recovery. Inset the Vista media disk and shut down the system. Restart the system and tab F12 key multiple times on your keyboard to launch boot menu. Select the option for CD/DVD ROM Drive and press <Enter>. Press any of the key on keyboard when you are prompted to “Press any key to boot from CD/DVD ROM Drive”. You may have to repeat the process if fail to press any key immediately when prompted because system won’t boot from Vista media.
  2. You will see Windows Loading process happening once booted from Vista media. Select Language i. e. English Time and Currency and Keyboard Language to use. Click Next.
  3. Do Not Select “Install Now” on the next screen. But select the option Repair Your Computer from the options at the left bottom. Select NO if you are prompted with the message, “Windows found problems with your computer startup. Do you want to apply repairs and restart computer?”
  4. Select Startup Repair option from the System Recovery Options and select Windows Vista option even though it is already highlighted or selected. Click Next.
  5. This will launch Startup Repair from Vista media and restart the system once the process is completed. Do not press any key this time if it is prompting you on a restart. Allow the system to boot to OS from Hard Drive.
  6. A message will be displayed if the Startup Repair is successful or unsuccessful. If the Startup Repair is unsuccessful, then the Startup Repair operation may ask you to start all over again.
So far we have launched Startup Repair from Windows Vista media disk. We now need to update the Storage Controller Driver which caused this problem of “Operating System Not Found”.

Visit NVIDIA support site i. e. http://www.nvidia.in/page/support.html for the updated NVIDIA ATA storage controller driver. Search appropriate storage controller driver and download it and save it to the desktop or any other preferred location. Right click the fine when download is completed, and Run as administrator to initiate installation. Complete the installation following simple instructions and update the drivers.

If the issue is still unresolved then try these steps because these errors could also be related to Hard Disk Drive where Operating System is installed.

Check if you have any external devices or peripherals such as Pen Drive, Flash Drive or any other USB devices are connected to the system. If yes then remove them.

Get into BIOS by pressing F2 key and check if the HDD is getting detected. If not then Load Default BIOS by pressing F9 and save changes by pressing F10. Check If the Hard Drive is getting detected by performing these steps.

If not then try to reset Hard disk drive and SATA Cable. You may have to arrange for a screw driver to open up the bottom base cover to do these coz the SATA cable may have gone loose or otherwise Hard disk drive may have not get resettle properly. Please check User Manual or alternatively you may also get Online User’s Guide from the system manufacturer’s support web site.

Check if any CD/DVD media in the Optical Drive coz if you selected as CD/DVD as first boot device any System BIOS then the boot sequence will first try to read Optical Drive. Also change first boot sequence to Hard Drive if it is select as CD/DVD Drive.

If still issue unresolved then Run Diagnostic test on Hard Drive and check for any Hard Drive errors. You may follow the following steps on Dell Computers to run diagnostic test – Remove Battery and connect Ac Adaptor only >> Press Fn (next to Ctrl key on left bottom of your keyboard) and power button both together to power on the system >> You will see Mats test running on the screen. Alternate way to run diagnostic test is to get into “One Time Boot Menu” by start tabbing F12 key immediately after pressing power button >> select the last option for Diagnostic. Check for error code if any. Error Code – 0142 and 0146 are related to Hard drive.

Replace Hard drive if Error Code is 0142. Try to Debug Hard Drive and reinstall OS, if error Code is 0146. You may use Drivers disk to debug from command prompt or can perform Disk Part form Windows OS Disk.

If the Diagnostic Test passes thru without any error then try to launch start up repair. You need to have Windows OS disk. Boot from OS Disk and you will get to see Windows loading files > Select language > select R form Repair your computer option >> you may try fixmbr or fixboot options.

Hi,

I will help you to solve your Windows Vista problem. The main reason of this error is that, your os is corrupt and it can not boot properly. You can try repairing from your Windows Vista DVD if you have. If it cannot repair, then you must reinstall the os in order to use your computer. There is no way.
