Hello Neil!

Yes, this is a common problem. There are many free media players available in the market. You can choose one like KM Player, VLC Player, Winamp, etc.

They are not only going to give you a free download facility, but also provide you better and exclusive facility like free updates, promotional news of their product, etc.

I think you should refrain from using Windows Media Player. Enjoy!

If you are using Windows XP then you are probably using Windows Media Player 9. This is a common issue I encounter whenever I play a DVD on Windows Media Player 9. I can play a VCD without a problem but DVD can be a headache though not often. The only solution that fixed my problem is when I upgraded Windows Media Player 9 to Windows Media Player 11.

Windows Media Player 11 is the last version of Windows Media Player that is compatible with Windows XP both 32-bit and 64-bit. It was released on October 30, 2006. Windows Media Player 12 is designed for Windows 7 and later operating systems. There is also another way of fixing the DVD decoder or codec issue and this is if you will install a video converter.

A video converter has many different codec for different video formats and file types. It also includes the codec used for DVD playback and it can fix the issue with your Windows Media Player. To try this method, download and install ImTOO MPEG Encoder. It can convert almost all video formats including Matroska or MKV [.mkv].
