There are many reasons why a file may not be saved successfully in excel. Have you tried to save the said file in another location like your hard drive, or perhaps to a removable storage device like flash drive? Were you not successful even when you tried saving the said file on your flash drive or on another location? If so then it is possible that you may have an issue with the transition formula evaluation feature or your template may contain an embedded object. Any of these two can be a reason why you are not able to save the said file successfully either on your hard drive or on a different location. Let me give you a website that can help you diagnose the issue further and have the solution handy so that you can save your file and not lose it. This problem can happen in any version of Microsoft Office Excel and is triggered when the saving process of Office Excel is interrupted. An example that can trigger this error is when you are saving your file to an external drive like a network drive then the connection was lost or has been dropped.

Another example is when you are saving to a floppy disk then the disk was removed while Office Excel is saving. When the error is triggered, you might get one of the following messages:

  • * “Filename.xls is locked for editing by . Click 'Notify' to open a read-only copy of the document and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.”
  • * "Cannot access read-only document filename.”
  • * "Disk is full.”
  • * "Document not saved.”
  • * "Document not completely saved.”
  • * “Document not saved. Any previously saved copy has been deleted. The document is not saved.”

To continue working with the file, you simply need to save the workbook or the file to a different drive or location. You can do this by doing a Save As.

If you still wish to save to the drive where the file is originally saved, you need to restore the connection if the file is located on the network or insert the disk back if you are using a floppy disk.
