Hi experts ,

I purchased a new External Drive manufactured by Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, which is 1TB in size. It worked well when I plugged it into my old laptop but when I clicked on the drive there was a dialog box saying, "The request could not be perform because of an I/O error." I tried it in my desktop computer and it was working good. I was even able to copy my files, install the GoFlex software, and backup some software too. Then I tried it again with my laptop but still it's not working. Can someone please tell me what seems to be the problem? All of the other flashdrives are working fine, so why does my External Drive commits error?

Thanks in advance .

Hello Demi Mike,

It seems like the USB ports of your laptop are faulty and hence cannot recognize or read the external hard disk when you connect it. You can verify that they are good or faulty by connecting another external drive like a flash drive or even a mouse and see if it is going to work properly.

You also need to check that the USB ports drivers have been installed on your laptop. You can check this be going to computer and then right click on it and then choose system properties. Click on device manager and see if the USB drivers are installed and working properly. If they are not, right click and then choose update drivers, and then choose to update them online.

Your old laptop is having an issue with this external hard-drive (you are having probably on that laptop Windows XP or some older Windows) because the cluster size of it is 4kb. Modern Windows are not having issues with this setting, but Windows XP is trying to emulate this, and this error occurs with some systems.

Backup all data from your external hard-drive.

Download and install EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition.

Run it, select your external hard-drive, pick from left side option “Format partition”, under “Cluster size” drop-down list choose 512Bytes. Click Ok button, then click Apply in upper left side of the program. If it is necessary restart your computer.
