The dependency service or group failed to start is the error I am receiving with my Windows Vista PC.

I also don’t have any internet connection, and I have a red X mark on my system tray.

What is the fix for this?

Error with the Dependency Service

Cause: The error can be caused because of the following two reasons

1. Can occur due to corrupt or missing system files. Perhaps one or more of the Windows Resource Protection file is missing or corrupt.
2. One of the Network services might have been stopped or disabled.

Resolution:  SFC /Scannow command or the so called System File Checker can be efficiently used to repair the missing or corrupt file.
Steps :

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Right Click on the Command Prompt and ensure that you run it as an administrator. Type the admin password if you are prompted to do so.

Admin right is essential to complete the task. In the command window type the following command and press enter
sfc  /scannow  { Please note that there is a space between sfc and scannow}

The file scanning is initiated and will rectify the error.

Wish you good luck.
