I get an error: Amnesia.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.

I am trying to play Amnesia – The Dark Descent, and I am getting an error that the game has crashed because of an Access Violation.

Exact error message received is "Error Amnesia.exe.

Error Amnesia.exe

Caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION<UNKNOW> in module at 0023:05963E22".

With this, I cannot play my game at all.

Any help suggestion will be appreciated and acknowledged.

Thank you.

There seems to be no problem regarding your operating system. Amnesia: The Dark Descent fully supports Windows 7.

Try updating your video card’s driver and see what happens. If you are using an onboard graphics adaptor I think you should buy and install a separate video card that supports OpenGL.

It is possible that your current graphics card doesn’t support the OpenGL function or maybe if it has it the game requires a much newer and higher version of OpenGL which your graphics card doesn’t have.

If you bought the game before May 17, 2011 you should download the 1.2 patch. Visit this link:

And then download the 1.2 update for Amnesia: The Dark Descent. This patch should fix your problem. If you bought the game after this date then your copy is already updated and you don’t need to download this patch anymore.

You should also check the amount of RAM installed on your computer. This game requires around 2 GB of RAM.

So if you have a lesser amount of RAM installed then adding more RAM might also fix the problem.

Hello Donnaa,

My suggestion is that you take the ownership of Amnesia: You will need to go to the Dark Descent game folder under Appdata folder, after that check if the issue still persists.

The following are the steps to guide you:

  • Click Start on your computer, and then control panel and in the search box write Folder options.
  • After that click Folder Options in order to open and then choose Show hidden files and folders.
  • After that open a Windows Explorer window.
  • And then go to C:Users(User Name)AppData.
  • You will need to find Amnesia: The Dark Descent game Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  • After that you will need to click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
  • And then click Edit, and then do one of the following: Change the owner to a user or group that is not listed. You can do that by clicking Other users and groups and then, in Enter the object name to select, you will type the name of the user or group, and then click OK. Or you can change the owner to a user or group that is listed by going to the Change owner to and then clicking the new owner.

Regards,

Carl
