While searching for something on Wikipedia  with Google and by clicking one of the articles; I was prompted to download the page by IE8 since it isn’t the mime-type. What is the possible explanation for this?

Hello Bernald,

The reason why you could have been prompted to download the page on Wikipedia is because the page could be in a format that cannot be viewed liked a zipped format unless you download it first and then extract it to a folder somewhere on your computer. Or maybe the file could be viewed better when downloaded first but you could still view it from the Wikipedia page.

So that check well if there is an option for viewing the file if the quick view format which you could use instead of downloading the page.

Hi,
The simplest solution is to stop showing this popup. To disable the popup viewing window, please follow below instructions.
In the IE browser Tools menu>>Internet Options>>in the Security tab >> Click “Custom level…” button>> this will open another window called “Security Settings – Local Internet Zone” >> under Settings go to Downloads section >>select the radio button Disable under the Automatic prompting for file downloads
>> click Ok>> in the Internet Options window click Apply and Ok buttons.

That’s right. The only possible reason why a web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer will prompt you to download a page is if the browser itself doesn’t support the format of the page. It doesn’t only with Microsoft Internet Explorer but with other web browsers as well. One example is an old mobile site written in WML format instead of the standard HTML.

When you open this kind of site with a regular web browser on your computer, the WML page of the site will be downloaded to your computer instead of opening it on the browser. For a web browser to open the page of a site properly the format of the page has to be supported by the browser or else it will be downloaded automatically.

If Microsoft Internet Explorer cannot open the site and performs a download, try using another web browser like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera.
