I bought an HP Pavilion P6-2011 Desktop PC for my spouse. It comes with Windows 7.

But we are more familiar with using Windows XP so we want to downgrade OS from Windows 7 to Windows XP Professional.

I tried every possible way to do it. But the computer won’t let me.

Please cite step-by-step method on how to do it correctly.

Thank you for giving me your valuable time.

Hi

You have to reinstall windows XP. I guess you have a windows XP cd and the cd key? Follow my instructions. Insert the cd and restart. When it asks to boot from cd press spacebar. This will start the installation process. When it asks for which partition on which to install select the partition where you have Windows 7. This will remove all files so back it up if you have any.

Choose the Ntfs file system when formatting. After this it will restart, then you will enter a name for your  computer. It will ask for cd key and asks you to create an admin account. All the things you configure here can be changed later so don't worry.

Windows XP will start after this.

Hi,

Make sure you have your Windows XP installation media ready and put it into your optical drive. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the optical drive before the hard drive so that it will read the installation disc first.

As soon as it is able to boot to the CD, just delete your current Windows 7 partition, then install Windows XP on your hard drive.

That should get it through.

There's also an option to run Windows XP Professional in your Windows 7 machine; if you have at least Windows 7 Professional installed. This is called Windows XP Mode. This should allow you to keep the Windows 7 installation and run your Windows XP compatible software. You can get it from here:

Thank you. Hope it helps.

Hello Barbara,

Windows 7 comes with a lot of features compared to windows XP like a very nice display resolution, support for more applications as compared to XP and it is so easy to use. I would advice that you reconsider your decision of downgrading to XP and give it a shot. Though it may look complicated when you start using it, it so easy to use, just an advancement of what XP offers.

But the procedure to use so as to downgrade from windows 7 to XP is to format your computer using windows XP so that all windows 7 files will be removed. You will have to get an installation CD for XP, once you have it insert into the computer DVD drive, and then restart your computer. When the computer asks you to boot from the CD, agree to that and the formatting process will start. Follow the instructions as it will prompt you till the end.
