Further, I would like to know whether Sharepoint 2010 SP1 PI will work efficiently on Windows XP Service pack 2. Kindly advise before I can make a decision. Thanks a bunch for your assistance.

IT's good to switch back to windows xp from windows 7, if your computer is running slow since windows 7 requires higher system requirements. Regarding your question that if Sharepoint 2010 would work efficiently on Windows Xp service pack 2? The answer is no you need to have service pack 3 as it is the minimum system requirement  for Sharepoint 2010.

Windows xp service pack 2 requires low system requirements than windows 7. In order for you to run SharePoint 2010 SP1 on windows xp, you will need windows xp service pack 3 or later because windows xp Service pack 2 has some limitations depending on the software that you are using. On windows 7 it depends on the version of windows 7 that you are using. You can try using windows 7 pro, starter or home premium or basic for added functionality because they require low system requirements and at the same time offering enhanced functionality.
