If you are looking for a screen recorder, the best option is CamStudio Free Screen Recorder. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Windows 8.x and Windows 10 are not officially supported. With CamStudio, you can record all screen activities on your computer with audio and generate an industry-standard AVI video file.

The application also includes a built-in SWF Producer which can convert the generated AVI file into a small, bandwidth-friendly streaming flash video (SWF). CamStudio is an open-source screen recorder designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system and released as free software. Unfortunately, this application previously distributed malware and dangerous viruses with its installer. Here’s a little history. The original CamStudio application was developed in October 2001 by RenderSoft software.

In December 2002, the source code license was converted into the GNU General Public License with the release of CamStudio 1.8. The source code for CamStudio versions 1.0, 1.4, and 2.0 are still available at the SourceForge website. eHelp Corporation, which owns a rival product called “RoboDemo” and now called “Adobe Captivate”, acquired RenderSoft software in 2003.

eHelp Corporation released CamStudio 2.1, an updated version under a proprietary software license only. In this version, they removed the ability to create SWF files. A series of acquisitions led to the company being acquired by Adobe. There have been constant reports about malicious code contained in several binaries of the application.

The binary on the web page was reported in January 2014 to be infected with the Trojan “Artemis!0FEA2B12900D”. Currently, the application is clean and can be safely downloaded.
