Do I need an additional device?

I am thinking of moving my desktop to the other side of the house without running a very long cable to connect it to the router. Is there a way for me to get internet connection with this kind of setup? Do I need an additional device? I need suggestions.

It is a good idea to have it cabled, but if you really want to have a connection that don't have long cables the you can try these:

If you have a router running a wireless connection, you can try buy a Wireless Network Interface Card or Wireless NIC to access you connection without putting any cable to it. If your Wireless Connection is too far away from the place where you put your computer, then consider buying a stronger Wireless Router with a lot of transfer speed, so that you will have a high connectivity once you move your pc.

I would advise to use wired connection rather than Wireless. In this type of connectivity, you will get the most Internet speed you've subscribed. With less intermittent connection, less interruptions and faster Internet speed.

There is no additional devices you need to connect from what you already have. Not unless, you have multiple computers to connect and other components such as iPhone, iPod, printers and other smart phones then router is needed if you have more than 1 equipment that needs Internet access. You will need to set-up WPA, WEP to secure your wireless connection. This broadcast the network name or SSID and it allows other devices to detect the network. You'll need to type the encryption code and it'll let you connect to the Internet.

Your computer should have Network Interface Card installed that runs from modem to your computer via Ethernet cord and or by using USB connection. If you decide to use USB then you need to have a CD driver to install the modem software into your computer. This the usual Internet connection used by most subscriber if they have only 1 PC.
