A virus is a program who attack itself with a computer program and it causes damage to the values of the other programs, hardware and to system registry. It only effects when some action is taken by some one.

Worm is another type of virus, it can copy itself without doing any action from someone. As it makes copies and then affects the whole process in a computer. It can travel across the network and thus cause a network problem also.

A Trojan horse look's like a program which is executable and it can be a file related to your work but when you execute, it starts getting problems in your system.

Antivirus protects from all of them but it should be updated for more effectiveness. Also firewalls protects from such problems.
