TIPS TO DESIGN A BUSINESS CARD

1) RESOLUTION

  • Open photoshop.
  • Click on Edit-> Preferences -> Units and Rulers.
  • Change the Rulers from cm to inches.
  • Enter units to points.
  • Enter 300 pixels/Inch in the ‘Print resolution’ tab.

2) CMYK

  • RGB method is used by the PC’s that mix red, green and blue to get all the colors.
  • CMYK is the subtractive color method that uses cyan, magenta, yellow and black to delete the green, red and blue colors forming other ones.

Before print RGB is converted to CMYK.

3) BLEED

  • It is the extra part required to be cut off.
  • It introduces a margin of error.
  • Use the Rectangular Marquee tool. Hold the shift button and draw a square.
  •  Put the guides coinciding with the marquee edges.

4) DISTANCE FROM BORDERS

  • For good aesthetics, keep some distance from the bleed guides.

5) TEXT

  • Text is one of the most important things in the business card.
  • The size should be at least 6 points otherwise it will be difficult to read.
  • The name should be larger than the contact information.
  • Also see the fonts that are suitable enough.

6) TESTING

Print shops provide trials. Do make use of it and take two to three trial printouts. Try to increase the saturation because it might happen that the actual print may look dull because of the conversion from RGB mode.

At the end, be simple and creative. Do not add much graphics into it. It may end up messy.
