RAM or Random Access Memory chips, commonly known as memory chips, allow the computer to read and write data quickly, thus, allowing programs to run quickly. DDR2s (Double Data Rate) are used by Intel LGA 775 and AMD AM3/AM2+ CPUs, while DDR3 are for Intel LGA 1156 CPU's, LGA 1366 and AMD AM3 CPUs.

Moreover, DDR2 modules can only be installed in DDR2 slots, and DDR3 modules can only be installed in DDR3 slots.

Apparently DDR2 and DDR3 RAMs have not much difference. The main difference is just the cut below the RAM just to tell that one should not insert DDR2 RAM on a motherboard which only supports DDR3 and vice versa. You can see the difference in given image below.

Now if we talk about different qualitative functionalities of DD2 and DDR3 then transfer speed of DDR2 is 400 to 800 Mbps while DDR3 transfer data @ 800 to 1600 Mpbs. Internal Memory Banks for DDR2 are four while DDR3 have eight. Another major difference you can say is DDR2 have no thermal sensors while DDR3 are manufactured with and without thermal sensor capability.
