I need some help with my parent domain controller. We are using a parent-child based network, working with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Recently I experienced some problems with it.

I cannot run the DCPromo command. We tried several solutions like rebuilding the server, but the problem persisted. Can someone give me advice on how to fix this?

You need to define certain rules that will guide you throughout the hierarchy of the system.

  1. First make sure that you use separate instances for the parent and child. In fact, for each parent, use the appropriate instances for its child so it differs from other children of the parents.
  2. Rebuilding will never solve the problem if the first parent and few children are not set properly. So all you need to do is to start by incrementing.
  3. First make the first parent and its child in the network. Run few scripts or things to see if it’s working.
  4. Continue building the network with such structure to see where the error really comes.
  5. At that time, when the error comes, see how it is being made and then Google for it. It will narrow down the problem as well.
