Hi Cybervalyn,

You need to configure your modem to bridge mode first, for it to communicate to your router. You should know your PPPoE settings. I know this because I have worked with ATT tech support. If you do not know your settings, you need to call ATT to help you with this because they have all your information in their system. They can guide you. You will also need a username and password for your router.

Another way would be to do a MAC Clone. This is by fooling your modem into thinking that your computer is connected to it. This is by getting into the router interface and type your computer's MAC address. This doesn't happen very often with ATT connection. However, we do this when I was working with Vonage as a tech support agent, doing MAC clone to different types of router. This works 90-100%.

Here are the steps on how to connect your router:

1. Need to make sure that you have internet connection with the computer connected directly to the modem.

2. Turn off all devices (modem, computer, including the router).

3. Look for the Ethernet cord that connects your ATT DSL modem and the computer. The cord is usually connected in the Internet slot/Blue slot/or WAN slot of your modem going to your computer. Unplug the end from the computer.

4. Connect the end of the Ethernet cord to the Internet slot of your wireless router. So your physical setup would be a cord from your wall to your modem, and then a cord from your modem to your router.

5. Connect a cord from one of the four slots of your router to the back of your computer.

6. Turn on your modem first, wait for the lights to come up. Turn on your router next, wait for the lights, and then your computer. Remember if you have more than 1 wired computer connected to your router, you might need to configure the IP address of your computer, there should be no conflict with the IP. It is best to turn on 1 computer first to check for internet connection after connecting your router to your setup.

7. Check for internet connection. If you are lucky, you will usually get internet connection without configuring the router.

But if you cannot connect to the internet you will need to configure your router settings. Remember if you have a wireless router, make sure that you configure the WEP key or a password for your wireless network. You don't want neighbors or unauthorized users to connect to your wireless network, as this may slow down your internet connection speed and especially there are a lot of wireless devices out in the market today 🙂 Either call you Internet Service Provider or the manufacturer of your router if all else Fails 😉

Hope this helps.

AT&T DSL uses PPPOE type of Internet protocol. Means, modem needs to authenticate to the Internet Services Provider's network to get an Internet access. It requires username and password to set to the modem and this modem communicates to the network, once authentication is correct then the network will let them in and should get an Internet access.

When connecting a router unto AT&T DSL Internet connection, modem has to be set first into bridge mode.

You'll need to log-in the modem re-configure the settings.

Log-in to the modem's GUI
Set it to DHCP or Bridge instead of PPPOE
Once the settings is set then you can install the router

There are 2 types of router installation, this either thru manual and the CD installation.

Either way, it'll let you connect to the Internet if configured properly. Since your ISP uses PPPOE and the modem was set to bridge, then the router has to be on PPPOE settings.

Using manual configuration, you'll need to log-in to GUI.

Open your Web browser and type 192.168.1.1
Log-in using the router's log-in username and password
Set the router into PPPOE and type the username and password
Apply the changes and reboot the modem/router

This steps should let you connect to the Internet with the use of a router.
