Well Kenny, there are two aspects of this question. If you want to change the IP of your computer while there is someone remoting on that, then you can do that. But in that case the remote connection will be lost and you have to re-stablish the connection link again with the other PC. There is no other way to do that i my knowledge. What version of windows are you using by the way? Is it windows 7? Other aspect is that you want to change the IP address of a remote computer from your place, then it is possible too. You can do this is by using remote registry and then updating the settings for IP. It works for all the versions of windows like 98, 2000, vista and XP. Haven't tried it on windows 7 yet though.

Hello Kenny.

Yes, you can configure your IP address even while someone is connected remotely to your computer.  However, the remotely connected computer will definitely be disconnected albeit temporarily.

To re-establish connection, it will depend on how the other computer connects to your computer.  If he connects via IP address, then you will have to somehow inform the other party what the new IP address is.  If, however, the other party connects to your computer via hostname, then he should just wait for your new IP address information to propagate to the DNS server or you could manually register the new IP address to the DNS server.

It's always a better idea to have remote computers connect through the hostname so they do not have to remember IP address and it would have minimal impact in cases where you have to modify existing IP addresses (e.g., for network maintenance).
