I am confused with my computer, when starting and shutting it down it takes almost 5 minutes. For the windows, it takes 20 minutes to open. Even through booting the system, it takes 5 minutes to boot and load.
I am annoyed to wait every time I open my computer and the same time when closing it. I need help about this. I have HP pavilion, Win SP2, Pentium 4, 2.6 GHz,1024 Mb RAM and 80 Gb hard drive.

Here is a simple solution regarding your problem;
Have a look on programs, which are set to auto start option and set those to manual, so that those can't lengthen shutdown or boot time. Try to turn off option in programs which are on auto update mode.

Also hibernate your system and only shutdown your system once or twice a week. Another reason of your current problem could be failure of your system to unload profile and that is not reconciled. Also programs which are installed in your system as well as drivers that lengthen time at start up and shutting down.Â

RAM: The higher the RAM is, the faster the computer. Software and Anti Virus: the more the programs, the more need of processing power and memory. Thereby makes your computer to slow down. More than one Antivirus will further make it worst.

Find unnecessary programs and uninstall them. Reduce unused desktop icons.

Clean X:windowsprefetch folder is a waste of time.

Turn off automatic updates, rather manually update the system, except anti virus programs.

Remove all remote drivers.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.XX and 8.XX. They use huge memory. Better remove them from startup.

Reformat hard drive and reinstall windows with a clean installation.

• Ensure presence of only one antivirus software. More than one antivirus software will eat up your space, memory and can cause conflicts.
The processor will be overloaded with them and you shall notice a significant drop in computer’s performance. However, if the computer has enough resources, then the performance won’t degrade. But for older computers, running antivirus software can slow the computer noticeably.
