Hi folks,
It's been like this for so many days now. For about 10 mins after starting windows, when I right click my desktop, my mouse pointer stays in "waiting" icon. Not only that, my computer slows down drastically and I notice I cannot run windows built in programs like task manager, regedit, msconfig etc.
What's causing this?
How can I fix this?

You need to take some measures to solve your problem. As you have said that you cannot run windows built in programs like task manager, regedit, msconfig, etc. it is because of virus attack. If your computer runs too slow, then you should go to safe mode. For going to safe mode, you need to reboot your computer.
While rebooting, press and hold F8 and safe mode menu will appear. Go to safe mode. There all applications are disabled except some. You can restore your system to a safe date. Again you can use run command as your wish. Please run msconfig and disable programs which do not need to load on system restart. Cleanup and defragment your drive by scheduling. Also you need to run disk check. Reboot your computer.

If the problem is just with desktop then I want to share my personal experience about it. Same happened to me when I changed my desktop background, the picture was too heavy too loeas desktop item really slowly.
Also whenever I right click on desktop everything was used to hang. But in parallel if you are unable to run regedit, msconfig and task manager utilities its due to virus and you will be able to remove it in safe mode.
The virus name could be of any of these names; Backdoor.IRC.Yoink.A, W32.HLLW.Kefy, W32.Petch.B, W32.HLLW.Cydog@mm, W32.HLLW.Maax.B@mm, Backdoor.Volac.dr, W32.Mytob.LD@mm, W32.Erkez.B@mm, W32.Kwbot.R.Worm, W32.Spybot etc. disable and remove them in safe mode and then restart windows normally.
