Why is my computer complaining that I have to defragment my disk after I just defragment the disk? I recently defragment a disk on my computer because of the disk fragmentation, now after the disk was defragmented; the computer started complaining that I need o defragment the disk again. What could be the problem? N:B: the disk is 50% full.

Hello,

Perhaps the defragment you performed was not complete or maybe there was an error in the process. Defragment again, but pay attention to the settings of the defragment; do a full defragment. Sometimes users will perform a short process rather than full because it takes less time, which is not a problem if two things are true:

  1. You do not have large storage space

  2. You do not have packed (nearly full) storage space

Also, your error may be the result of problematic data that is in need of management. Defragmentation is only one part of system maintenance. You should also address other potential issues through many other methods. One simple way to do this is with cleaning software that will perform many tasks –for example, wiping free space, resolving registry issues, and removing junk data. Try using this type of utility.

Sometimes the defragger suggests to repeat defragmentation, even after we made one. I presume, since you wrote you have enough space that, it's not only about free space that is clearly shown, but about free space that is contiguous, I am talking about free space that has very big unfragmented portions that wrap the file together, so it cannot be defragged. Probably, it accumulated enough over some period of time. I suggest you clear up some space in your disk manually anyway, and try again. If after clearing some more space, reports the same, you are free to ignore it, as it should not mean anything serious, could be just a minor performance loss at the moment.

Mathew
