Hi Coshaun, I have read your concern about how is Global Positional Systems is related with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System). Actually, GPS and GLONASS are most likely the same. GLONASS was made as a counterpart for GPS by the Russian government for the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. On the other hand, GPS was made and maintained by the United States Government. Both share the same principles in navigation and data transmission.

In my opinion, GPS is better than GLONASS because it was implemented since 1973, meaning it was already tested by time. While GLONASS, being only an alternative to GPS, was only developed in year 2000 and was only stabilized and made fully available five years ago. I hope this information helps you. 🙂

The GPS – Global Positioning System became operational in 1978 and internationally from 1994. It is the world’s most used satellite navigation system that comprises of 32 medium earth orbit satellites is 6 different orbital planes. The exact number of satellites is not exactly known because each year some older satellites are retired and are replaced with newer and more advanced versions.
The former Soviet Union developed Global'naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (Global Navigation Satellite System), or GLONASS, that became fully operational in 1995. After the Soviet disintegration, it was in despair but joint efforts restored it afterwards.
