Choosing a program for remote desktop connections is actually a matter of different factors.
the first of those factors and also the most important is the operating system. here are some examples of free remote desktop for both windows and Linux:
Windows:
1-windows remote desktop: which is a great and free tool you already have in the system
2-TeamViewer : also a great tool although not free but considered cost effective
Linux:
In Linux you haveVNC,FreeNX,XDMCP,XRDP and a lot more found in your distribution repositories.
