Hello Janeparen,

That is not the reason why your CD ROM drive has stopped working. There should be some other valid reason behind that problem. One will be the cable connecting the drive to the motherboard is disconnected or is loosely attached and therefore you will need to rectify that.

Otherwise the drive may have been gotten dirty due to accumulation of dust which is blocking the lens hence the drive cannot read data from a CD when it is inserted. You will need to clean the drive either using alcohol, methylated spirit or paraffin to remove the dust.

You must try this.  Eliminate the disk in your CD ROM and check if the CD ROM opens correctly because sometimes they get jammed.  Next go to the Control Panel and then select Device Manager ; go to option DVD/CD; double click the drive from the device manager and click the driver Tab.  Right click the drive and then uninstall restart to restore the avoidance driver load.

If that’s how old your optical drive is then it is not that old. It should still be working. If your optical drive can’t read a CD or DVD, try inserting a different disc. If it can read other discs but not a particular disc, try cleaning the disc itself by washing your CD or DVD with a solution of water and baby shampoo.

After washing, wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth. If the drive can no longer read any discs, try cleaning the lens of the optical drive with a lens cleaner. You can buy an optical lens cleaner from a local computer store or online. Try checking out the following optical lens cleaner on eBay:
