I have formatted my hard drive recently and installed windows xp sp2, during the installation , my computer gave an error and asked to use the default settings, the xp installation has been completed. But now the OS does not detect the CD drive, i am able to open/close the drive but the drive is not visible in the mycomputer / explorer windows.  I am not able to view the contents of the drive.  Please clarify?

It may still be there but during installation, it must have been hidden somewhere. Go to Control Panel>Administration Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management. If they are there, assign new Letter drives for them. You can also look for them in the Device Management as unknown devices. You can also try to install/uninstall the drivers. When you start your computer, press F8 to go to Safe Mode. Open My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager> click the plus (+) sign next to CD/DVD. right click on each component and choose uninstall. Then restart the computer. When it starts again, the computer will recognize a new drive and automatically install it.

If the optical drive suddenly disappeared after installing Windows XP, check that the drive is detected properly in the BIOS. This hardware needs to be detected first in the BIOS before Windows can use it. Otherwise it will not appear in the operating system and you won’t be able to use it. Turn off or shut down your computer then open the CPU case.

Now, check that both cables of the optical drive are connected properly. Try also to disconnect and re-connect the ribbon cable then for the power supply, use the other power supply cable. After this, turn the CPU on then press Del, Delete, F2, or whichever key is used to go to the BIOS.

In the BIOS, go to the drive management section and see if the optical drive is detected. If there is no problem, the drive should be detected easily. If your optical drive is IDE, check that the jumper setting is correct then try detecting the drive again. Once the drive is detected, save the settings and reboot. The drive should now appear in Windows XP.
