For Mac OS.X, I am trying to capture a video with sound using my webcam. I would like to know if VLC has the capability to do so? Can I use it to record both video and sound? If it can, will it work on windows as well? Will there be any settings or add-ons needed for this particular task?

Hi,

Yes, you can capture both video and audio with the VLC player. There is one compatibility issue which is that you will need the same type of VLC and web cam. For example, if your driver is 32-bit, you will need a 32-bit VLC to record video and audio.

This function can be done in both windows and Mac. It doesn't require any plug in if you know the appropriate command to function the program.

If you want to try VLC media player to capture or record a video with your web cam, it is very much capable of doing it. If you want to try this setup, you need to make sure your web cam driver is installed properly and the camera itself is working. To avoid any problem with the media player, update VLC to the latest.

Download the latest VLC media player for your computer. It supports Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Android, and iOS. For Windows, it requires Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10. For Macintosh, it requires macOS 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks, 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, 10.15 Catalina, and 11.0 Big Sur.

To connect your camera with VLC, first, connect your webcam to your computer. Next, start VLC media player then go to “Media” and then select “Open Capture Device.” Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + C on your keyboard. From there, setup your camera with VLC.
