Can’t connect my workstation to server

Good day, I want to add a computer workstation with Windows XP Pro to a Window Server 2003 domain, when I have this error message:

A domain controller for the domain nwtraders could not be contacted.

I can ping the IP of the server from the workstation. How can I resolve this issue?

Mr. Jerome Raganit,

As you said, you can ping IP address of domain controller, it means there are no network issues and any connection or network problem. But pinging IP address and pinging a machine name have two variant scenarios. To identify a machine name your DNS should be working properly. Further the domain controller name should not be the host name of the machine but a “fully qualified domain name” like nwtraders.com instead of only nwtraders.

First configure DNS properly. Mention DNS suffix in “domain controller” from “network control panel” then mention the domain controller’s IP address in TCP/IP settings of the workstation. Trying pinging domain controller’s IP then machine name if successful, domain will be connected without any issue.
